Padre pubblicista e madre pittrice, un talento innato per la recitazione e una bellezza fuori dal comune, che le costerà la vita. Renate Müller nacque a Monaco il 26 aprile del 1906, e a soli 19 anni debuttò a teatro con “Ein Sommernachtstraum” (Shakespeare’s Midsummer Nights Dream) diretta da Pabst.

Trasferitasi a Berlino, nel 1929 ebbe il suo primo ruolo cinematografico in “Peter Der Matrose” (Peter the Sailor). Il successo fu immediato e fino al 1937 comparve in 25 film , tra i quali il celebre “Die Privatesekretärin”, tradotto anche in inglese e ”Viktor und Viktoria” del 1933.

La fama raggiunta, i capelli biondi, i bei occhi azzurri, destarono l’interesse del regime nazionalsocialista, che pressò Renate con sempre maggiore insistenza affinché lei divenisse il volto per i film di propaganda del partito. Numerosi quanto le richieste furono i rifiuti della bella attrice, ma la vita nella Berlino di quel tempo era difficile: sospetti, dicerie, semplici invidie di colleghe potevano essere la causa di processi sommari, deportazioni, omicidi, e Renate aveva un angoscioso segreto che doveva restare nascosto.

Così cedette alle pressioni e nel 1937 recitò in quella che sarebbe stata la sua ultima comparsa in celluloide: “Togger”, pellicola dal contenuto antisemita. Hitler fu sedotto dall’attrice, perfetta incarnazione dell’ideale di donna ariana, ma nonostante le sue lusinghe lei rifiutò di essergli amica. Goebbels insospettito da tanta distanza e dai suoi continui viaggi nella nemica città di Londra, prese a farla pedinare dalla Gestapo.

L’inconfessabile segreto emerse: Renate aveva un fidanzato, viveva in Inghilterra ed era un ebreo. Si persero così, tutto d’un tratto, le notizie sulla bella ragazza: nuove star ariane presero il suo posto sugli schermi. Si diffusero strane voci secondo le quali Renate era stata ricoverata in manicomio a seguito di ripetute crisi di nervi, abuso di alcol e di morfina. Repentino giunse il finale di questa triste storia, il 7 ottobre del 1937 l’attrice fece un lungo volo dalla finestra della sua casa a Berlino. Il corpo fu in fretta cremato presso il Wilmersdorf Krematorium per essere sepolto in gran silenzio all’interno del Parkfriedhof Lichterfelde a Berlin Steglitz. Ai tanti fan fu proibito di partecipare ai funerali, il governo cercò di placare gli animi affermando si fosse trattato di suicidio, ma dei vicini di casa della ragazza, in silenzio, dissero di averla vista precipitare dal balcone all’arrivo in cortile degli uomini della Gestapo. Molti altri, invece, giurarono che furono proprio i soldati ad aver lanciato nel vuoto l’attrice che in vita rifiutò di esser lanciata sugli schermi di un cinema maledetto.

Father publicist and mother painter, an innate talent for acting and a beauty out of the ordinary, which will cost her life. The fame achieved, the blonde hair, the beautiful blue eyes, aroused the interest of the National Socialist regime, which pressed Renate with increasing insistence to use her face for the nazi propaganda films. Life in Berlin – at that time – was difficult: suspicions, rumors, simple envies of colleagues could be the cause of summary trials, deportations, murders, and Renate had an anguishing secret that was to remain hidden. So he gave in to pressure and in 1937 she played in what would have been her last appearance in celluloid: “Togger”, a film with anti-Semitic content. Hitler was seduced by the actress, the perfect embodiment of the ideal of an Aryan woman, but in spite of her flattery, she refused to be his friend. Goebbels, suspicious of her distance and her constant journeys in the enemy city of London, began to  follow the woman by Gestapo. The unconfessable secret emerged: Renate had a boyfriend, lived in England and was a Jew. Thus, all of a sudden, the news about the beautiful girl was lost: new Aryan stars took their place on the screens. Strange rumors were spread that Renate had been hospitalized as a result of repeated nerve crises, alcohol abuse and morphine. The end of this sad story came to a sudden, on October 7, 1937, the actress took a long flight from the window of her house in Berlin. The body was quickly cremated at the Wilmersdorf Krematorium to be buried in great silence inside the Parkfriedhof Lichterfelde in Berlin Steglitz. To the many fans it was forbidden to attend the funeral, the government tried to appease the soul by saying it was suicide, but the girl’s neighbors, in silence, said they had seen her fall from the balcony to the men’s Gestapo. Many others, however, swore that it was the soldiers who had launched into the void the actress who in life refused to be thrown on the screens of a damn cinema

Nazi Men Aesthetic | Bellezza Maschile nel Terzo Reich

L’oscura voragine entro cui sprofondò l’ideologia nazista fu contraddistinta da una singolare antinomia che vide il trionfo di un’ossessiva ricerca della perfezione estetica alternarsi a una morale scellerata. All’animo turpe di molti soldati del Terzo Reich corrispondeva un’apparente contraddittoria bellezza fisica, quasi come fosse necessaria a purificare la crudeltà dei loro pensieri. Attraverso questa serie di immagini la mia ricerca esibisce lo splendore del male e il travestimento del ripugnante, che generano una euritmia spaventosa.

The obscure chasm in which the Nazi ideology collapsed was marked by a singular antinomy that saw the triumph of an obsessive pursuit of aesthetic perfection alternating with a nefarious morality. To the turbulent mind of many soldiers of the Third Reich corresponded an apparent contradictory physical beauty, almost as if it were necessary to purify the cruelty of their thoughts. Through this series of images my research exhibits the splendor of evil and the disguise of the repugnant, which generates a frightening eurythmy.

Nazism and Beauty, two pictures

Sono a Berlino per lavoro, visitando il bellissimo museo di arte moderna “Berlinischegalerie” sono stato colpito da due immagini del 1940 che ritraggono rispettivamente una bambina e un giovane uomo.

I due soggetti ritornano improvvisamente ad essere in vita, raccontando attraverso gli scatti qualcosa che in modo indelebile ha segnato le loro esistenze congiungendole al presente e proiettandole al futuro.

Sono cittadini di Berlino, biondi, esteticamente appaiono perfetti, volti dai lineamenti carezzevoli, corpo maschile vigoroso e sensuale.La fanciulla appare triste, lo sguardo gioioso di bambina fissa il vuoto di un orizzonte buio. Il naso all’insù si scontra con la geometria di un sorriso spezzato, le labbra scendono verso il basso a descrivere un’allegria infranta, presagendo un declino sconfinato.

Una pericolosa vertigo stringe e risucchia l’intera esistenza di un popolo scaraventando sciagurati esseri nella più tetra delle storie da ricordare.

La ricerca della perfezione estetica volta alla supremazia della razza ariana emerge da queste due immagini con prepotenza, il culto del corpo e la celebrazione dei tratti somatici seducono lo sguardo e atterriscono l’animo.

I’m in Berlin for business, visiting the beautiful museum of modern art “Berlinische Galerie” I was impressionated by two 1940’s images portraying a little girl and a beautiful boy, boths are from Berlin, blonds, appearing aesthetically perfect, faces are amazing, male body vigorous and sexy. The beautiful girl looks sad, joyous eyes of child looks at a creepy horizon, without lights. The research for aesthetic perfection and for the supremacy of the Aryan race emerges from these two images with arrogance, the cult of the body and the celebration of somatic seduce the eye and terrify the soul.

Spingersi oltre, ma tornare anche indietro. Rifiutare un approccio comune per dar sfogo a un “Io” diviso tra pulsione feticistica e rifiuto dei rapporti sociali. Tutto questo prende forma, e vita, nella Bambola Sessuale, che ha una storia assai antica. Da disegni e scritti si evince per certo il loro utilizzo sin dal ‘500, rapportabile a una speciale forma di parafilia detta “pigmalionismo”, consistente nel provare piacere durante il compimento di  un atto sessuale con una statua o una rappresentazione plastica del corpo umano.

Il nome che identifica questo tipo di disturbo psicosessuale trae la propria origine dalla figura mitica di Pigmalione. Il re di Cipro infatti si innamorò perdutamente di una statua da lui stesso creata, e ottene da Afrodite che la scultura fosse trasformata in donna vivente che poi sposò.

A differenza di quanto avviene con i più comuni “giocattoli sessuali”, in uso da uomini e donne anche nel Medio Evo, nel pigmalionismo la bambola è un feticcio che si sostituisce interamente all’essere umano, e l’appagamento giunge solo nel caso in cui sussistano determinate condizioni quali appunto l’inumanità, descrivendo quindi un processo psicologico molto più complesso. Scompare l’animus del rapporto e lo scambio da esso derivante, sostituito da un Super-Io che è paradossalmente anche l’esplicita affermazione di un ego svilito e incapace, annoiato, individualista.

Col trascorrere del tempo questi strumenti del piacere furono perfezionati e realizzati in  stoffa imbottita di lana, sovente al capo erano cuciti capelli veri, sul volto dipinti occhi, naso e bocca. Chiamate “dames de voyage” accompagnavano gli uomini che per varie ragioni erano costretti a vivere lontano dal gentil sesso.

Curioso quanto avvenne durante la seconda guerra mondiale, quando i soldati tedeschi avrebbero dovuto avere a propria disposizione bambole gonfiabili da poter riporre comodamente nello zaino dopo l’utilizzo. Il progetto non fu mai realizzato. Si dovrà attendere la seconda metà del ‘900 per assistere a una capillare ed efficace diffusione di bambole gonfiabili realizzate in lattice. Bionde, brune, rosse, oggi il loro aspetto umanoide sfida la perfezione, amate dai collezionisti trovano spazio nei musei, ma il loro posto preferito resta sempre nel segreto di una stanza, per un amore di plastica.

Unlike what happens with the most common “sex toys”, in use by men and women even in the Middle Ages, in the pigmalionism the doll is a fetish that replaces entirely  the human bodies, and the fulfillment comes only in the case in which certain conditions exist such as inhumanity, thus describing a much more complex psychological process. Disappear the animus of the relationship and the exchange deriving from it, replaced by a superego that is also paradoxically the explicit affirmation of a debased and incapable, bored, individualistic ego.

With the passing of time these instruments of pleasure were perfected and made of woolen stuffed fabric, often the head was sewn real hair, on the face painted eyes, nose and mouth. Called “dames de voyage” accompanied the men who for various reasons were forced to live far from the fair sex.

Curious what happened during the Second World War, when German soldiers would have to have at their disposal inflatable dolls to be easily stored in the backpack after use. The project was never realized. We will have to wait for the second half of the 20th century to witness a capillary and effective diffusion of inflatable dolls made in latex. Blondes, brunettes, reds, today their humanoid appearance challenges perfection, loved by collectors find space in museums, but their favorite place always remains in the secret of a room, for a plastic love.
